Carrara

The history of Carrara is fascinating, as much for its politics as for its stone. Visiting there one cannot help but be affected by the immensity of the mountain, the shear brutality of the mining process, and the subtle beauty of the statuario - the marble selected by those who wished to come as close as possible to the warmth and vitality of human flesh. Michaelangelo struggled with the mountain many times in order to produce what we all regard today as extraordinary.

I travel there as do many artists to find just the right block. Here are some pictures from my last trip. It is an extraordinary place.
